Pregnancy Essentials for Mama 🤰
Prenatal Vitamins
When it comes to prenatals, we're looking for folate in its bioavailable form (ex. methylfolate), avoiding any synthetic fillers, and the right dose of each ingredient. Sadly, the free ones your doctor gives you often miss the mark. Can’t stomach pills? Don’t stress - we’ve got a tummy-friendly gummy pick too. Of course, everyone’s needs are different, so be sure to check with your own healthcare provider before starting or switching supplements.
Bird&Be Female Fertility Power Prenatal + CoQ10 ↗
~$90
Bird&Be just reformulated and this is now one of the best most universally appropriate prenatals out there and Anne Matthew's # 1 choice (Toronto's "fertility witch"). It includes iron, choline, folate (in its bioavailable form) & has absolutely no fillers or junk. The addition of CoQ10 makes this even better, helping with egg quality! You also can't beat the convenience of the packaging.

Bird&Be Male Fertility Power + CoQ10 Pack ↗
~$80
Why are we including a male prenatal? Because sperm are 50% of the equation! You can optimize your sperm in ~ 3 months time (it takes about 72-90 days for them to fully mature) so taking this in lead up to conception is a great strategy (and Anne Matthews, Toronto's "fertility witch" says so too!). It's got your Coq10 (motility), vitamin C & E (helps with cellular DNA damage), NAC, Zinc, & Selenium (repair crew) + omega 3 + L-Carnitine. Snag it on super sale at well.ca right now!

NFH Prenatal SAP ↗
~$60
One of the best on the market. Has the bioavailable form of folate (especially important if you have the MTHFR gene!) and comes recommended by Anne Matthews (Toronto's "fertility witch"). Warning - it does make your pee gatorade yellow and requires 3 pills daily!

Thorne Basic Prenatal ↗

A top rated prenatal vitamin. Has the bioavailable form of folate (especially important if you have the MTHFR gene!). A Gary Brekka reco.

Bird&Be Gentle Prenatal Gummies + DHA ↗
~$55
A great option if you're struggling with nausea during the first trimester or if you're someone who can handle a lot of pills. They do NOT include iron (so be sure to supplement that as needed), but we reach for these on the days we just cannot fathom swallowing pills.

Belly Creams and Oils
Hydration is your belly’s BFF. Whether you're aiming to prevent stretch marks or just soothe the itch, a good belly oil /cream locks in moisture and feels like a mini ritual. Bonus points for ingredients you can actually pronounce.

Electrolytes
An absolute must during pregnancy, postpartum, and especially while breastfeeding. Hydration can be a full-time job - electrolytes make it easier. These mixes help with nausea, dehydration, and energy when water isn’t enough and we always lean toward options without added sugar. You can also DIY with a pinch of mineral salt in lemon water or sip coconut water instead. If you have high blood pressure or other medical conditions, some electrolyte mixes may not be right for you - always check with your healthcare provider before adding them to your routine.
LMNT Electrolytes ↗
~$35
The best way to stay hydrated when pregnant. These are sugar free which is key, but they are very salty as a warning! Start with the variety pack to figure out which flavour you like best, and you can start with half a pack to get used to the saltiness and work your way up!

Pregnancy Bras
Your boobs will get bigger - sorry, it’s just science. Most folks eventually ditch the underwire, but needs vary by size and stage. We focused on soft, high-quality fabrics that feel good all day and look smooth under tees (or office wear). Comfort is king.
SPANXsmooth™ Bra‑llelujah! Unlined Bralette ↗
~$50
One of our favourite bras for all stages - pregnant, breastfeeding, postpartum & beyond. Fun fact - this is Whitney Port's go to every day bra. Buttery fabric, stretchy enough to whip out a boob, comfortable enough to sleep in, thick enough to not see a nip, looks great under a t-shirt and provides lots of support with the thick straps.

Skims Naked Plunge Bralette ↗
~$75
For smaller chested mamas to be. The softest thinnest fabric. Easy to pull to the side for feeding. Note that this does NOT have a lot of support and it's a thinner fabric than the Spanx option, but it's still a great option especially for summer months under a thin tshirt etc.

Skims Fits Everyone Cross Over Bralette ↗

This bralette provides more support than the Naked version, is a thicker fabric and a more minimalist design. Great for a thinner strap option vs. the Spanx one and if you're wearing something with a V cut its very flattering in that department!

Pregnancy Jeans
We have found pregnancy jeans you'll actually want to wear. If you’re living in them daily, a splurge-y pair can be totally worth it - but we’ve also found some great budget-friendly options. Even better if you can borrow a pair or score them secondhand. Either way, plan to have at least two pairs that you feel comfortable, confident, and still stylish in. Above or below the bump? That's up to you. Until your bump is bumping, you might not fill out the above the bump options, but these are great and stay up better for 5m+.
Ilouity 03 Wide Fit ↗
~$280
We're obsessed with these jeans. The most comfortable denim, stylish wider leg, & easy to dress up for the office. We love them so much we wish they made a non-pregnancy version. Make sure you check out their nursing tank too.

Non-Maternity Leggings that work for Pregnancy
We’re all for keeping maternity spending low where it makes sense. If you'd rather invest in leggings that work before, during, and after pregnancy, check these out - they beat traditional maternity pairs in versatility and value.
Splits59 Airweight High Waist Legging ↗
~$190
Like a lulu align legging but WAY better quality and won't pill as quick. They're nice and thin so will grow with you, but size up for some extra room (and you'll still be able to wear them post baby too!). They are definitely an investment though, so you can find cheaper for sure.

lululemon Align™ High-Rise Pant ↗
~$120
So forgiving and stretchy. Size up for some extra room, but you can often get away with your regular size too! These won't go all the way over the bump (and eventually they will sit under), so if you want full bump coverage you'll have to get their extra high version (or a real pregnancy legging)

Pregnancy Pillows
Around the second trimester, sleep starts getting... trickier. Enter the pregnancy pillow. Whether you go for a giant, full-body cocoon or a more compact style, the goal’s the same: support your bump, hips, and back so you can actually rest. Some people feel smothered by the big ones - others can't sleep without them. Fair warning: your partner might want one too.

Belly Support Bands
As your belly grows, so does the strain on your back, hips, and everything in between. A support band can help -whether you need light lift, full wraparound comfort, or just something to smooth things out under clothes. You might start reaching for one in the second or third trimester, but not everyone ends up needing one, so it’s okay to wait and see.

City Stroller
A giant stroller in the city is more hassle than help. These compact picks are ideal for city sidewalks, long walks, restaurant lunches (just wheel baby right up to the table), and hopping on and off transit. Easy to fold, carry, and stash - without sacrificing storage space or function.
Bugaboo Dragonfly ↗
~$940
Our #1 stroller choice for most moms. You do not need a stroller any bigger than this even if the world tells you that you do. It has a generously sized basket and plenty of storage, yet it’s compact enough to lift off your porch, pop into a store, or hop onto a streetcar. It folds like a dream, making it effortless to toss in the trunk. And the wheels are big and sturdy enough to handle slush, snow, and city life with ease. There is also a bassinet for purchase so it can be used from day 1. Weight: ~21 lb (or ~23 lb with bassinet) Age: From birth (with bassinet) or ~6M up to ~50 lb (4-6 years) Basket: Holds up to 22 lb of supplies, while the expandable rear pocket / pouch can move around to the rear, front or handlebar (it's the best!) Bassinet: Sold separately (~$250)

Stokke YOYO ↗
~$900
Yes, this is a travel stroller, but most people who own it will grab this 9 times out of 10 over their full size strollers. It has amazing steering, is so light weight, and has a one handed fold & unfold. It's the only stroller you see on the streets of NYC, London & Paris. It wheels right onto a plane and then folds & fits in the overhead bin. It's perfect for a city family. For newborns, order the newborn pack, which make this the perfect stroller for the first 6 months of baby's life! You can also put a board on the back for older kids. While this is pricey as far as travel strollers go, as a primary stroller this is a steal! Weight: ~13 lb Age: From birth (with the newborn pack/bassinet) or ~6M up to ~48.5 lb (4-6 years) Basket: ~10 lb Bassinet: Newborn pack sold separately

Uppababy Cruz V2 ↗
~$960
More compact than its big sister the Vista, but still has really substantial storage & good wheels for snow and sludge! If you're set on a full size stroller, but still nothing to massive, this fits the bill. The bassinet is sold separately, but it is approved for safe for overnight sleeping, which makes this a great place to have baby napping during the day in those early days. Weight: 21.5 lb (or ~30 lb with bassinet) Age: Suitable from birth with the purchase of their bassinet or Infant SnugSeat accessories (sold separately), or 3 months to 50 lb without the bassinet. Basket: Extra-large, easy-access basket with 30 lbs. weight limit Bassinet: Sold separately (can alternatively purchase the cheaper "UPPAbaby Infant SnugSeat").

Bugaboo Butterfly 2 Compact Stroller ↗
~$610
While also known most for being a travel stroller, this is a really amazing city stroller option. That said, it's not our favourite choice for newborns, despite it being suitable from birth with the recline. We love it for 4-6M+! Weight: ~16 lb Age: Technically "from birth" with the recline (debatable!), but we would say ~4-6M, and up to ~50 lb (4-6 years). Basket: 17.6 lb capacity Bassinet: n/a (only offers a recline to make it newborn suitable)

Full Size Stroller
If you do want a full-size stroller - whether it’s for the extra storage, all-terrain wheels, or a more spacious setup - these are the ones we’d actually recommend. Great for longer walks, rougher weather, and carrying all the things.
Bugaboo Fox 5 Renew Complete Stroller ↗
~$1360
Sleeker & narrower than the generally more well known UPPAbaby Vista, but also more chic & less used by the masses. You get a huge basket, easy fold, and don't have to sacrifice on wheel size (both back and front wheels are substantial for navigating slush / snow!). Weight: 21.12 lb (or ~29 lb with the bassinet). Age: Suitable from birth to about 4-6 years ( or ~50 lb). Basket: The under-seat basket holds up to 22 lb (10 kg) or 39 litres (10.3 gallons). Bassinet: The bassinet is included, along with the reversible toddler seat (valuable for when you're not quite ready for baby to face forward / want them to nap).

Nuna MIXX Next Stroller ↗
~$1150
Ok this stroller won us over. We actually stopped a new mom on the street about it. It lays fully flat, and the fabric folds to make it suitable for a newborn without the need for a bassinet. This is definitely a full size stroller, with big wheels and basket. Out of the box, it comes with infant car seat adapters, making it compatible with any Nuna infant car seat. Weight: 28.3 lb Age: From birth to ~50 lb (4-6 years). Basket: They say only 10 lb capacity, but users have proved it can hold more and definitely a full size diaper bag. Bassinet: Not needed, but can be purchased separately and added.

Weight: ~26 lb (without the bassinet, or ~36 lb with the bassinet) Age: From birth (with the use of an infant car seat or Cot S Lux 2, sold separately) to approx. 4-6 years (~55 lb) Basket: The under-seat basket holds up to 22 lb (10 kg) or 39 litres (10.3 gallons). Travel Stroller
Travel strollers can be hit or miss - flimsy, awkward, or just plain annoying. These ones aren’t. They’re high quality and durable without the bulk: super light, easy to carry, fold like a dream, and compact enough to fit in overhead bins. No gate-check needed. Do you need one? Not always - but they make travel way easier. We also love keeping a travel stroller in the trunk for everyday errands so you never have to deal with packing up your primary stroller. Live in a city? A travel stroller might actually be all you need.
Stokke YOYO ↗
~$900
Our favourite travel stroller because it's one of the very few you can use from birth (with the newborn cot!). It folds up seamlessly, is easy to carry, and you can wheel it right onto the plane and store it above your sear in the overhead. You can also clip your car seat to it (instead of the newborn cot) and wheel baby through the airport, right up to the gate (then gate check your car seat!). Note that this is definitely more than a travel stroller (our #1 city stroller reco) and works for kids as old as 4-6! Weight: ~13 lb Age: From birth (with the newborn pack/bassinet) or ~6M up to ~48.5 lb (4-6 years) Basket: ~10 lb Bassinet: Newborn pack sold separately

An incredible travel stroller option that's very comparable to the Stokke Yoyo. Super easy to use and will fit in most airplane overheads. They advertise that this is suitable from birth, as it does recline fairly flat, but in our honest opinion we aren't completely sold, as it's not nearly as structured / secure as the Yoyo newborn pack. You can however attach a car seat (check for your specific compatibility / adapters). Weight: ~16 lb Age: Technically "from birth" with the recline (debatable!), but we would say ~4-6M, and up to ~50 lb (4-6 years). Running Strollers
If you plan on running with your baby, you’ll want a stroller specifically built for it. You'll want a three-wheel design, larger tires, and solid suspension. They're also going to be great for long walks, even when you’re not running.
Thule Urban Glide 3 Stroller ↗
~$850
This is the latest and most popular stroller for serious runners or trail walkers. Built for both newborns and toddlers, it’s smooth, sturdy, and made to handle stroller naps mid-jog. It’s definitely an investment - but worth it if you plan to hit the trails or go for runs often.

UPPAbaby Ridge All-Terrain Jogging Stroller ↗

UPPAbaby is newer to the jogging stroller game, but the Ridge has been really well received for blending performance with the comfort and features people love in a classic stroller. Double Stroller
As a rule, we don’t recommend a double stroller unless you’re having twins or babies very close in age (when a stroller board just won’t cut it). And please don’t buy one “just in case” for your first baby. Enjoy a lighter, more compact option while you can. But if you really need a double, these are the ones we actually like - and no, the Uppababy Vista did not make the cut.
Donkey 5 Mono Complete Stroller ↗
~$1280
If you have two kids super close in age (or twins!) and a board is out of the question, this is a great double stroller option that has been a longstanding favourite and for good reason. The side by side is so much more balanced and comfortable for 2 kids and it still does fit through *most* doorways. Weight: 27.5 lb (w the toddler seat or bassinet) Age: From birth to ~50 lb (4-6 years). Basket: Underseat basket has ~22 lb capacity, Side luggage basket, also supports an additional 22 lb. Bassinet: included!

Bugaboo Kangaroo Complete Stroller ↗
~$1340
We tend to vote Bugaboo > UPPAbaby and find it to be a higher end, more elegant and unique product. So if you MUST have a double stroller (we strongly reco putting a toddler on a board vs. doing a double), then we would opt for this over the more well known UPPAbaby Vista any day. Important to note that this will have one child higher and one lower (similar to the Vista), NOT side by side like the Bugaboo Donkey. Weight: 29 lb (toddler seat), 30 lb (bassinet) Age: From birth to ~50 lb (4-6 years). Basket: ~29 lb capacity, with 4 storage compartments Bassinet: included!

Stroller Sun Blanket
Sunscreen is not recommended for babies <6 months so this is highly recommended to help protect your baby's skin from the sun. Although strollers have sun shade covers, there are still openings where the sun peeks through. Great for stroller walks, covering babies legs in the carrier, putting it over a playpen or car seat, etc. Works as a bug net too.
Jolly Jumper Solar Safe Net ↗

Breathable and unlike using a swaddle blanket, it won't trap heat. Provides 85% UVB and 82% UVA protection.

Infant Car Seat
When it comes to car seats, safety is non-negotiable - and every pick here checks that box. From there, we’ve considered price, function, durability, and weight (because if you’re lugging it around, every pound counts).
Clek Liing Infant Car Seat ↗
~$500
Expensive, but one of the safest on the market. The differentiator is the metal load leg which helps absorb impact in the event of an accident. It's also one of the narrowest on the market (we've seen it go 3 across with the Ling + 2 Clek Foonfs). Suitable for children 4-35 lbs and up to 32" tall. Not the lightest car seat, coming in at 9 lbs. Can be installed with a vehicle seat belt (no base needed), making it suitable for travel. That said, we definitely prefer the Nuna PIPA urbn car seat for travel, given it uses way easier rigid install vs. straps.

Nuna PIPA Infant Car Seat ↗
~$560
One of the lightest car seats you can buy. This is important if you're in and out of the car a lot, or if you plan on clipping and unclipping your car seat from your stroller. Recommended for 4 to 35 lbs, and up to 32 inches in height. Without the base, weighs 7.9 lbs. Can be installed with a vehicle seat belt (no base needed), making it suitable for travel. That said, we definitely prefer the Nuna PIPA urbn option for travel, given it uses way easier rigid install vs. straps.

Graco 4Ever All-in-One Convertible Car Seat ↗
~$530
This is the best value play out there! One seat, 10 years of use. It grows with your child from day one through big kid years, transitioning from a rear-facing seat (4–40 lbs) to a forward-facing seat (22–65 lbs), then to a high back booster (40–100 lbs), and finally to a backless booster (40–120 lbs). The downside? This won't be your smallest car seat, so probably not the best choice for 3 across families. It's also hefty (weighting ~23 lbs) so this isn't a car seat you're taking in and out of your car or attaching to your stroller (that said, some of us hate doing that anyways!).

Nuna PIPA Urbn Infant Car Seat ↗
~$660
Finally, a full-time infant car seat that’s also travel-friendly. The new PIPA installs completely baseless - no separate base required and none of the awkward strap setups other seats rely on. Weighing just 7 lbs, it’s ideal for city living, hopping in and out of Ubers, switching between cars, or frequent travel. It's perfectly compatible with their travel stroller, but also the Nuna MIXX next stroller (another new fav of ours!). Note, you're definitely paying a premium, but depending on your lifestyle this could be absolutely worth it!

Convertible Car Seat
When your baby outgrows the infant seat, it’s time for a convertible. These grow with your child - rear-facing at first, then forward-facing - so you won’t need to buy another for years. Bigger, heavier, but built to last (until the switch to a booster seat, which can be as late as age 6!).
Clek Foonf Convertible Car Seat ↗
~$780
Insanely priced, but one of the safest on the market. This keeps toddlers at a great height and can accommodate rear facing for quite a long time. And we know 6 year olds still fitting in this comfortably in a forward facing position. This is also one of the most narrow car seats and works great if you're doing a 3 across set up or have a smaller car. Weight: ~38 lb (heavier, built like a tank and ~10lbs heavier than the Fllo). This isn't a car seat you're moving around! Rear-facing: from 5lb with infant insert, and 14–50 lb without, up to 43" Forward-facing: 22–65 lb, up to 49" Confused between the Foonf vs. Fllo? Foonf --> Heavier, pricier, more premium safety tech (REACT + rigid LATCH). Best if you want the safest, most solid install and don’t plan to move it often. Fllo --> Lighter, more affordable, still excellent safety. Best if you’ll be switching cars or traveling with it.

Nuna RAVA Convertible Car Seat ↗

Not a cheap option, but incredibly great value as it's suitable from birth! Loved for its super simple install, easy switching from forward to rear facing (and extended rear facing ability), and a ton of different recline positions. Also has cupholders (so awesome for toddlers on long car rides!) Age: From newborn (with included infant insert) to approx. 4-6 years or 65 lb Rear-facing: 5–40 lb, up to 49" Forward-facing: 25–65 lb, up to 49" Weight: 27 lb

A really great brand, has a rebound bar when rear facing similar to the Foonf which we love, and has handy cupholders for drinks / snacks! Also designed for extended rear facing similar to the Clek Foonf and Nuna RAVA. It has a really slim profile (under 17" wide), so it can fit 3 across in many vehicles. Not brand picky here - but you definitely don't need the video, electronic ones. More of a distraction than a help.

Car Window Cover
Car window covers help block harsh sun and keep the back seat cooler - especially during naps or long drives. Simple, cheap, and not something to skip.
Munchkin Brica Magnetic Stretch to Fit Sun Shade ↗

Baby Carriers for Wearing at Home
We skipped the long, complicated fabric wraps - there are easier options now that give you the same comfort and snuggly newborn feel without all the origami-level tying. These soft, lightweight carriers keep baby close while you move around the house (and keep your hands free).
Studio Romeo Duo Knotless Baby Carrier ↗
~$120
Amazing for newborns and for the first few months. A great option for baby wearing at home. This is superior to all other fabric / wrap carrier options - don't even bother with the long strips of fabric. This is so much easier to use and get baby into - and we've tried them all!

Baby Carriers
If you’re planning to wear your baby often, it’s worth investing in a solid carrier. These are your do-it-all options: ergonomic, supportive, but super simple to use. Great for errands and walks, or just even around home (but also check out our section dedicated to some at-home cozy options!).
Artipoppe Zeitgeist Baby Carrier ↗
~$650
We do love this carrier but there are some caveats. It is GREAT for early days, but post ~7/8 months or when you want to start having your baby forward facing, it's not the best carrier (not designed ergonomically for forward facing and it lacks the more comprehensive back support you'll need when baby gets heavier). That said, it's comfy and so fun, and it sparked joy. Could still very much be used forward facing for a quick grocery shop or errand, we just cannot recommend going for a long walk like this. They also have great resale value so think about buying it second hand (we did!), or buy it and know you'll use it for multiple kids / sell it afterwards.

Bassinet
Bassinets are great for those early newborn weeks when you want baby close by - especially for middle-of-the-night feeds. But babies outgrow them fast, so we always recommend borrowing one if you can or choosing an affordable option. You likely won’t use it beyond 4–6 months, so no need to splurge.
Nestig Wave Convertible Bassinet/Crib/Toddler Bed ↗
~$850
This is a bassinet we could really get behind buying as it converts to a full size crib, and then into a toddler bed as well. It's also beautiful. Great bang for your buck with this one!

This is a really popular choice for moms and especially those who have had a C-section given the swivel and ability to adjust the height to exact bed level. People either love or hate the Snoo. Our 2 cents? We suggest a wait and see approach here. Your baby might do absolutely great in a standard bassinet, and then you can avoid creating any dependency on the bells and whistles of the Snoo and also save a lot of $! If baby is really struggling to sleep, then go for it and place an order at that time - or better yet, borrow one from a friend / buy it second hand.

Baby Monitor
Choosing a monitor mostly comes down to preference: do you want to watch baby on your phone or on a separate device? These are our top picks for in-home use. For travel or overnights away, we prefer using a non-wifi option (see our travel monitor section) and leaving your main setup in place.
Nanit Pro Monitor ↗
~$430
Our tried and true. Nanit gives you all the info you need, with super reliable customer service. It’s perfect for parents who want to monitor from their phone - no extra screen, no extra gadget. You can check in while you're out, and easily share temporary access with babysitters, grandparents, or nannies. It even has two-way audio (yes, you can talk to your baby from the app!) and built-in sounds like white noise that can be controlled from the app. That said, it's not ideal for travel - unsecured wifi networks and setup at other homes can be a pain. We recommend keeping a non-wifi monitor on hand for those situations.

Crib
The crib is often the big-ticket item of the nursery - but you don’t need anything fancy. Bonus if it converts to a toddler bed later (many do, and some even work as bassinets). Some families use the crib from day one, others keep baby in a bassinet beside the bed for the first few weeks or even up to six months. Either way, it’s still great to have a crib set up in the nursery for naps or practice sleep.
Ikea Sniglar ↗
~$110

Humidifier
A humidifier can make a big difference, especially during dry winter months when the heat’s running. It can help ease baby’s congestion and soothe dry skin, too. Look for one that’s easy to clean and designed to resist mold and bacteria buildup - because if it’s a hassle to take apart, you won’t clean it (and that defeats the purpose).
Carepod One Stainless Steel Humidifier ↗
~$350

Sound Machine / Night Light
These sound machine–night light combos are a must-have for the nursery - especially for late-night feeds. You can pre-program the sound type and volume you like, then switch between sleep, feed, or daytime modes with a simple tap or via your phone. They’re not really travel-friendly (they’re pretty big), so we recommend a smaller portable sound machine for on the go. These continue to earn their keep well into the toddler years, so you’ll get tons of use.

It also has cry detection, but if you're using the Nanit monitor you don't really need this. It's also important to note this is a separate app from the Nanit monitor (it would have been really nice if they were consolidated!) so that was a miss for us!

Sleep Sacks <3M
For babies under 3 months, we love keeping those arms contained - whether tucked snug by their sides or up by their head. The moro reflex is still going strong, and these swaddles help calm it without the middle-of-the-night origami.
Love to Dream Swaddle ↗
~$45
If you are adamant your baby needs their arms up, then this is a good option that still helps with the startle reflux. When they get a bit stronger they can still fold their arm down to self soothe. A great day time option that's super easy to take them in and out of (vs. having to do a full swaddle routine).

Miracle Blanket Swaddle Wrap ↗
~$35
This is NOT your typical swaddle. It's better. We swear by this swaddle more than any other sleep product. You must watch a YouTube video on how to properly do it (it's not intuitive, but it tucks behind their arms so they are truly unable to wrestle out and really relax into it). People will say "my baby doesn't like being swaddled" or "my baby can get out of any swaddle" - they haven't tried THIS.

Sleep Sacks 3-6M (or whenever they can get out of a swaddle!)
The Merlin suit (or equivalent is a magical middle ground between the swaddle and the sleep sack. It helps muffle baby’s startle reflex and ease the transition out of swaddling - great for babies who sleep best with a bit of resistance. Just note: it’s only safe until baby can roll in the suit, so it’s a short but sweet phase.
Merlin Suit ↗
~$60
The absolute best option for when baby is outgrowing the swaddle, but still isn't rolling back to front. At this age they still have the startle reflux and this is a perfect transition before moving to an armless sleep sack. It's also the cutest thing ever and they look like little astronauts. You can order these on Amazon in the US (right now they're very tricky to find in Canada new!), but plenty of people sell them secondhand!

If you want to avoid needing different TOGs (thicknesses) for different seasons, this is an amazing option. Because it's made of merino wool, it regulates babies temp no matter what the season. We like the standard version because it's zippered vs. snaps, but they also have a "universal" size option that is adjustable so you can use it from early days to 2 years! So yes, they are more expensive, but you definitely save a ton by not buying a million TOG versions / sizes.

Breast Pump
Breast pumps: love ’em, hate ’em, or barely use ’em. Before dropping $$$ on a fancy hospital-grade model, try renting or borrowing - you might pump daily, or barely at all. If you’ll be bottle-feeding breast milk (for date nights, solo errands, or sanity), here’s the gist: hospital-grade = fast but you’re stuck to a wall; hands-free = portable but slower, more parts to clean, and needs charging. And for those early hospital days, a cheap manual pump might be all you need to get things flowing. Everyone’s feeding journey looks a little different, so it’s worth waiting to see. Hot tip: many insurance plans cover breast pumps! Also, when it comes to pumps, flange size matters! It's worth spending time getting this right.
Medela Pump in Style Max Flow ↗
~$380
As the name says, this is for MAX pumping output. It's one of the best reviewed pumps, is hospital grade suction but your typical baby stores don't currently stock it. This site has an amazing selection and also great rental options (which is a great option until you know what your pumping needs are!). It can be powered via a wall outlet or a battery if you want to move rooms. Pros are the minimal parts and that it's among the easier to clean - you can also get a different accessory kit to easily make this hands free!

These wearable pumps are amazing for multitasking - no cords, no bottles hanging off your chest, and you can actually move around while pumping. These are also more portable for travel. Nursing / Breastfeeding Pillow
A good nursing pillow can make a huge difference in the early days of breastfeeding - helping you position baby properly and taking pressure off your arms and back. You’ll likely reach for it constantly in the first couple months, but don't worry, t’s not a forever item. You'll likely be done with it by 3–4 months or repurpose it for tummy time or baby support once nursing becomes more second nature.
Snuggle Me Organic Feeding + Support Pillow ↗
~$110

Nipple Cream
Nipple cream: Definitely something to buy ahead of time and have packed for the hospital. You’ll want to start using it before you think you need it. In the early days, go for something more heavy-duty (don’t leave the hospital without Apno, or even better, try to get it in advance). For longer-term use, we love clean, lanolin-free options that don’t need to be wiped off before feeding.
Apno Cream ↗
~$50
Short for “All-Purpose Nipple Ointment,” this stuff is a lifesaver for painful, cracked nipples. It’s your BFF in the early days of breastfeeding, because as much as we love gentle, organic balms, sometimes you need to bring out the big guns. You’ll need a prescription from your OB, midwife, or family doc, and it has to be filled at a compounding pharmacy. Pro tip: get it before baby arrives so it’s one less thing to worry about when things get real.

Nipple Pads
You might wonder why you need these. But here’s the truth: boobs leak. A lot. Especially at night, or when you’re out in public thinking about your baby, looking at your baby, or hearing your baby cry. Disposable pads are super convenient, especially in the early days - but reusable ones are softer, gentler on sore skin, and often less visible under clothes. You can totally use both, depending on the day (or your laundry situation).
Reusable Nipple Pads ↗
~$10
These are so much softer than the disposable kind - no annoying wrappers, no crinkly edges, and they look way better in a bra. Just toss them in the wash (you’re already doing 100 loads a week anyway). They’re also way cozier for sleep.

Surprisingly one of our all time favourite bras... always. Whether pregnant, breastfeeding, postpartum, for sleep, working out - it does it all. Supply Boosters
While there are tons of cookies, muffins, and gimmicks out there, the science is thin. These are two options we actually trust and know work. But remember, the biggest driver of milk production comes down to supply and demand - more feeding or pumping = more milk. Staying well-fed and hydrated is also just as important. Please note you shouldn't take any milk boosters preemptively - give your body a chance to figure out its supply (and yes, oversupply can be just as tricky as under).

Silverettes
Silverettes are small, pure silver nursing cups designed to sit on top the nipple in between feeds. They're amazing for the first few weeks when nipples are PEAK sore and when you're dealing with cracks or bleeding (IYKYK). Silver has natural antibacterial, antifungal, and anti-inflammatory properties, and these also create a nice barrier between your skin and any fabric. They also keep this moist by trapping small amounts of breast milk which also helps things heal!
Silverettes ↗
~$65
You can absolutely find cheaper dupes, but they really do not work as well. Get the Silverette brand, but also ask your mom friends - someone is bound to have a pair they're no longer using (it's a brief window of use and you can totally sterilize them!).

Burp Cloths
Burp cloths are a must-have - not just for burping after feeds, but also as backup bibs, shoulder protectors, or even quick clean-up cloths for inevitable spit-ups and spills. You’ll go through a lot in those early months, so it’s worth having a good stash on hand.
Milkbarn Muslin Burp Cloths ↗
~$20
Milk Barn muslin cloths are definitely a splurge, but the organic cotton is so soft, light, and breathable. They're the perfect in-between size - not as bulky as a full swaddle but bigger than your average cloth, making them super versatile and easy to toss in a diaper bag. Sadly these ones only ship to the US.

Glass Bottles
We’re big fans of glass bottles. Not because we’re chasing microplastic paranoia, but we definitely feel better about heating milk in them and popping them in the dishwasher (pro tip: just fill a Yeti tumbler with hot water and pop the bottle in for a few minutes). That said - glass bottles don’t leave the house. We learned that one the hard way. And once your baby starts walking or holding their own bottle, glass quickly turns into a hazard. Bottles are a total trial-and-error game. Have a few on hand, but don’t stock up - babies can be picky. If you can, borrow a couple of types from a friend to test before buying a full set. That said, these are the ones most babies love (and the ones we keep coming back to). When it comes to bottle size, get both. The 4oz bottles are perfect in the early days, but once your baby’s taking bigger feeds you’ll reach for the larger ones every time. After a few months, you can retire the small guys. Confused about nipple flow? Start slow from day one, but don’t be afraid to move up quickly. If your baby’s fussy, frustrated, or not finishing bottles, try the next flow - often that’s all it takes.
BIBS Glass Bottle - 8oz ↗
~$25
Newer to the bottle market, but a very well known soother brand. Love reheating in glass vs. plastic, but don't make this your "on-the-go" bottle option (lesson learned - use plastic outside the home!) Most babies won't take 8oz in one feed, but by 2+ months many will take more than 4oz/feed (the other standard bottle size), so it's nice to have the bigger size ready!

Plastic / Silicone Bottles
Yes, we love glass bottles - especially if you’re warming milk before feeds. But here’s the thing: glass bottles stay home. Once your baby is walking (or once you’re on an airplane or in a restaurant), trust us - you don’t want to deal with shattered glass. We’ve learned the hard way. Don’t be a hero...buy the plastic bottles too. They have their place, and they’ll save you more than once. Bottles are a total trial-and-error game. Formula Mixer Pitcher
If you’re exclusively formula feeding, this is such a helpful strategy. Mix up a full day’s worth (up to 24 hours) and keep it in the fridge - so you're not shaking and prepping bottles every single time. It might sound trivial, but it saves time, stress, and dishes when you're doing it over and over again.

Formula
It’s smart to have some ready-to-serve (pre-mixed) formula on hand for the early days - even if you don’t plan to bottle-feed right away. But don’t overdo it: babies can be picky, and their tummies are sensitive, so it’s best not to commit to a year’s supply of one brand just yet. We’ve highlighted a few high-quality European options we love below, in both ready-to-serve and powder versions for use after the newborn stage.
Kendamil Organic Whole Milk Baby Formula ↗
~$50
An organic European formula with Prebiotics, No Palm Oil or Soy, and with DHA - and you can get it at Walmart! This is our top choice because not only is it such high quality, but it's easily accessible (don't need to pre-order a week in advance from third party sites!)

Bottle Washer
If you’re mostly breastfeeding with just the occasional bottle, it’s probably not worth the splurge. But if you’re formula feeding or pumping and bottle feeding most of the time, a washer is a game-changer - it saves you from endless scrubbing, keeps bottles consistently clean and sterilized, and frees up a little extra time (and sanity). You can also throw pump parts, soothers, etc. in there!

Diapers
Don’t stock up too much at the start - babies grow fast, and every brand fits a little differently. It’s worth trying a few before committing to your favourites. The U.S. has loads of super clean diaper brands, but we’ve rounded up our favourites that are available - and in some cases, even made - right here in Canada.

Change Pad
We love a rubber change pad over the ones that need cloth covers. You’re doing so many diaper changes in those early days, and being able to just wipe it down is a lifesaver. Bath Time 🛁
Baby Bath
Definitely something to buy in advance so you’re ready for baby’s first bath. That said, some people choose to wait a few days to let the vernix absorb into baby’s skin. In the beginning, you don’t need soaps, shampoos, or lotions - just warm water does the trick. You also absolutely do not need to bathe your baby every day, unless you choose to make it part of their bedtime routine. When it comes to bath style, it’s all about preference: some are self-contained (so you don’t have to run a full bath), while others sit inside your regular tub and let you fill water around them. We’ve included a favourite in each category.

Post Bath Oils / Lotions
In the early days, we suggest using nothing at all - newborn skin is still adjusting to the outside world, and giving it time helps protect their natural moisture barrier. Around the 1–2 month mark, once baby’s skin has settled and isn’t peeling or overly sensitive, you can start introducing gentle moisturizers / oils and it can be a nice part of your bath time ritual. We’ve opted for unscented picks that are extra safe for sensitive skin (but many of these same brands also offer clean, lightly scented versions made with essential oils if you prefer a bit of fragrance down the line!). That said, we recommend keeping scents (on baby and on yourself) to a minimum in those first few months as it can overwhelm them (and nothing beats newborn smell anyways!).

Bonnets are a superior style of baby hat - hands down. They’re adorable, but more importantly, they keep fabric snug around the ears so no wind sneaks in. The under-the-chin ties are key to keeping hats actually on. There's only a small window when bonnets are socially acceptable, so lean in while you can. Laundry Detergent
When it comes to laundry detergent we always opt for unscented, clean products in those super early days. Eczema Cream / Wound Cream
Think of these as your calm-the-chaos creams. For dry patches, scrapes, mystery rashes, and that bruise from the coffee table corner - these products are superior to the rest and do what they say they will do, all while being gentle enough for baby.
Tubby Todd All Over Excema Ointment ↗

The holy grail. If your baby has eczema, dry patches, redness, or even baby acne, this is the cream. Thick, gentle, and wildly effective. For baby acne, we usually say hands off (really - don’t touch it!) and if you’ve recently started a probiotic, consider pausing it. Sometimes that’s the real culprit. Thermometer
Unfortunately, forehead thermometers just aren’t that accurate. You’ll likely need different types for different stages (rectal for newborns, ear for older babes). Probiotics are one of those can’t hurt, might help additions - especially if your baby got antibiotics at birth (like if you tested positive for GBS before labour). We also recommend a dark colour (especially for hospital) when things are still a little messy.

Postpartum Support Leggings / Bands
When it comes to all the postpartum belly wraps & products, you want to avoid the girdle-like options as these can put too much downward pressure on your pelvic floor. We love a gentle compression legging, but also included a great wrap that's also pelvic floor approved (and ok for C-section!).
Belly Bandit Mother Tucker Leggings ↗
~$80
These are pricy for sure, but amazing and we really prefer leggings to a wrap (easier to grab for). These help you feel so supported and smoothed in the first few weeks post baby. And let's face it ... who doesn't want help feeling a little bit more snatched postpartum. Note these are NOT ideal for post C-section.

Peri Bottle
Think of a peri bottle as a tiny squirt bottle that becomes an unanticipated must-have post birth. It’s there to help you gently clean down there when wiping is a no-go. Quick Tip💡 - squirt it AS you pee (not just post) to avoid the burning/discomfort that can occur as a result of your pee's acidity.

Tens Machine
These can be a drug-free way to manage pain during early labour, using gentle electrical pulses to interrupt pain signals and boost endorphins. They are all the rage in the UK and Australia, but for some reason aren't super popular in Canada (yet!). These are also more common in the midwife / doula world - ideally they have one and you can avoid purchasing your own! If you do buy one, check if your insurance covers it - some plans do, which is a nice bonus.

~$210
Designed specifically for labour (vs. general tens machines), this one has a bunch of different settings and a built in contraction timer so you're not having to time them elsewhere! Duplicate Baby Lounger
We recommend almost everyone have multiple loungers (one for each floor), but especially as a C-Section mama you want to avoid any extra trips up and down the stairs. These are amazing for putting baby down on the floor nearby so you can have a shower, cook a meal, or take a break during those sleepy newborn months. Babies do outgrow these once they start becoming mobile, so a great item to borrow from a mom friend who's done with hers! ** This is not for unattended or overnight sleep. Do not put baby in the lounger on high surfaces.
Snuggle Me Organic ↗

High Chair
Something you can definitely consider waiting on until baby is closer to 6M! The second hand market for high chairs (especially the 3 we have recommended) is phenomenal - you can certainly find these used and in great condition.
Stokke Trip Trapp High Chair ↗

Lalo The Chair ↗

This brand is really gaining in popularity. It's very similar in aesthetic and weight to the Stokke Clikk, but it comes with the padded cushion which is ideal for younger babies (you have to order this for the Clikk), has optional added support you can add, and the ability to grow from high chair to booster to toddler seat (the Stokke Clikk is just a high chair).

Stokke Clikk High Chair ↗
~$230
A way better price and definitely more minimalist vibe than the Tripp Trapp. Comes apart very easily for storage or transport (legs pop right off). The legs do splay out a bit, so be mindful of where you put it / tripping over them. Note this will not convert to a toddler chair (which is totally fine - a lot of people jump right to a booster anyways!).

Cybex Lemo 3-in-1 High Chair ↗
~$400
We love the convertibility of this high chair - start with the newborn bouncer attachment, which clips onto the chair frame so your baby can lounge safely at table height. The biggest selling feature vs. the Tripp Trapp (arguably the most popular convertible high chair)? No tools are required to adjust this one - you can even do it with one hand!

High Chair Food Catcher
If you have a dog, you can likely skip this section. If not, one of the most frustrating things about feeding a baby is watching them throw everything you've prepared onto the floor. This is to help you repurpose some of that thrown food and also to prevent scrambled eggs from being ground into the cracks of your floorboards (IKYKY).
Catchy Food and Mess Catcher ↗

It's ugly. It's a cheap material. But honestly if you don't have a dog it's going to save you so much hassle, and also from wasting SO MUCH food. Twin Feeding Support Solutions
Feeding twins is a whole different ball game - two hungry babies at once means you’ll want to prepare and set yourself up with extra support (literally and figuratively). Having the right gear can make a big difference in keeping both babies comfortable and helping you save your arms, back, and sanity. From supportive nursing pillows to side-by-side feeding seats, here are some of the most helpful tools twin parents rely on to get through double feeding (whether it's bottle, boob or both!).
